Peasants set an example and form the Sanitary Committee for Popular Defense

The following is a note received by the Editorial  Board of A Nova Democracia on the formation, planning and actions of the Sanitary Committee for Popular Defense created by the peasants of the Revolutionary Area José Ricardo, in Agreste Pernambuco, to fight the New Coronavirus, maintain the organization and the popular struggle.

Since April 5, peasant families in the José Ricardo Revolutionary Area, located in the rural area of Lagoa dos Gatos (PE), have decided to form their Health Committee for the Popular Defense of Riachão de Dentro to combat the pandemic of the New Coronavirus ( Covid-19). The objectives of this Committee are: 1) To organize claims for water and medical monitoring; 2) Create the conditions to prevent and treat possible cases of the New Coronavirus; 3) Boost production and organize new strategies for its commercialization within the pandemic.

Instead of gathering dozens of people in a People’s Assembly to present the Committee and its objectives to the peasants, we decided to organize several small meetings with a maximum of ten people each with the objective of doing the same work. We don’t stop our activities, we just adapt them to the reality we have.

On the morning of April 12, the Committee activists started making homemade fabric masks for use in the activities and on the afternoon of the same day they started collecting signatures for a petition demanding that the Companhia Pernambucana de Saneamento (Compesa) ) release the water supply for the entire population of Lagoagatense, especially for the population of peasant communities.

Until April 19, the Committee intends to deliver this petition to those responsible for COMPESA in the city of Lagoa dos Gatos (PE), as well as to demand from the city hall and other municipal bodies the immediate solution to this very important claim.

Between April 20th and 26th, to boost production, the collective roeado of corn and beans will start, where the Committee will organize peasant families in a collective effort to guarantee the supply of a large quantity of grains for 3 months from now.

Between April 27 and May 3, the Committee will organize, depending on the number of stranded peasant productions, Home Sales, Traveling Fairs and the Transport of products to CEASA.

United and organized, we will defeat all enemies of the people, including the New Coronavirus!
