While the Brazilian government has always had a negative effect on Indigenous people, the rise of
Bolsonaro to power signals an intensification of the genocidal campaign against them. Bolsonaro has openly said that he wants to completely get rid of indigenous land reserves, removing the one protection that keeps landlords and corporations from taking over their land for commercial use.
Over the past year, Indigenous communities have seen a rise in land invasions, in which large mining companies and the latifundio (big landlords), often with the aid of paramilitaries, violently invade indigenous reserves, forcing people off their land and in some cases murdering people. Bolsonaro has also attempted to dismantle all federal agencies tasked with protecting or providing social services to indigenous people.
