Struggle for Land

Due to the semifeudal nature of Brazil’s countryside, the peasant struggle for land is integral to the larger New Democratic Revolution. Due to the large number of landless peasants, who have been pushed off their land by the rich landowners and large corporations, the peasant movement focuses on capturing unused land and establishing productive farming communities.

Historically the latifundio (big landlords) have used various means to evict peasants from their land, sometimes using falsified government documents, and at other times utilizing the military, police, and private paramilitaries to violently displace them. Poor peasants also support the nationwide struggles of workers and students by blocking major rural highways that connect cities with burning roadblocks. The League of Poor Peasants (LCP) is the revolutionary organization of peasants currently leading the fight for land in the Brazilian countryside.
